Fallout 76 steel farming gets faster by scrapping super mutant guns with Scrapper and running West Tek or Uranium Fever. Buy bulk only as backup.
.yeah, stop sleeping on weapon scrapping if you're broke on Steel in 2024, because West Tek is still stupid good and way faster than chasing random cans. I know caps get tight too, and as a professional buy game currency or items in U4GM platform, U4GM has been convenient for me when I'm lazy, so I grabbed U4GM Fallout 76 during one of those “I need ammo now” weeks, but for Steel itself I still just farm mutants. Scrapper on, loot every gun, scrap everything. Boring? Yeah. Effective? Also yeah.
What I've been running
My usual loop is West Tek, outside to reset, back in after a minute or so. I tested it again this week because I saw someone say Uranium Fever was better now, and nah, not for me. Super Mutants keep dropping Assault Rifles, Laser Rifles, Boards, all that junky stuff people ignore. With Scrapper under Intelligence, those weapons turn into a fat pile of Steel fast. Could be wrong on exact totals, but in my runs one clear was easily a few hundred Steel once I stopped being picky.
Uranium Fever still slaps though
I'm not saying Blackwater Mine is mid. Uranium Fever is still goated if it pops while you're online. Mole Miners dump shotguns and Miner Gauntlets everywhere, and those scrap way better than most loose junk. Plus you get event rewards, some XP, and a chill public event where nobody expects you to sweat like Scorched Earth. If you're low level, this is probably safer than chain-running West Tek unless your build is already cracked.
Don't farm cans like a goblin
Look, I used to do the tin can route too. Can Chimes at Pleasant Valley or Eastern Regional Penitentiary are cute because 9 cans equals 18 Steel, and weights at Charleston Fire Department or Vault-Tec University are decent. But world junk has that weird pickup memory thing, where you need to grab a ton of other items before the same stuff comes back. Enemies don't have that problem in the same annoying way. That's why weapon drops beat wandering around staring at shelves like you're playing Janitor Simulator 76.
The lazy backup plan
If I'm half-watching YouTube, I'll claim Grafton Steel Yard and slap extractors on the two Steel spots. It's not crazy DPS for your stash, but 20 Steel every few minutes adds up while you're doing other stuff. Just don't cry when the defend event pops or some bored player decides your workshop is content. I also keep my Collectron on junk sometimes, though ngl, it's more “nice bonus” than real farming.
Stuff people forget
Super Duper matters when you're turning all that Steel into ammo, especially 5.56,.45,.50, or Railway Spikes. Same for smelting iron ore if you're doing Excavator Power Armor mining, though I only bother when I've got extra Acid from Toxic Larry's or Floaters. The ore route works, but 2 ore plus 1 acid for 5 Steel feels slower than just deleting mutants. If you're totally stuck, I've even seen people use Fallout 76 boosting when they don't have time to grind events, but imo Scrapper plus West Tek is still the cleanest answer. lmk if I missed anything.
