B.C., Ottawa co-ordinating to fight ‘unprecedented threat' from extortion crime, Eby says

Gary Anandasangaree, public safety minister, outlined measures the federal government will take to assist victims of extortion while taking part in a summit on the issue in Surrey, B.C., on Friday.

The federal and provincial governments have announced new funding to help police investigate extortion and support victims in B.C.Officials have set aside $4 million for police investigations, while another $1 million will be spent helping police support victims of the crime.There has been a surge in extortion-related crime largely affecting B.C.'s South Asian community, with reports centred in Surrey, Abbotsford and Delta.Delhi Police said Friday they had arrested a suspect in one case B.C. police are investigating, a trio of shootings at Kap’s Cafe in Surrey with possible links to extortion.The federal public safety minister said the government is working to "restore" public confidence in the justice system, as residents have lost faith in the process.
